This song was inspired by my son, William Freeman, who suggested the title back in the early stages of the COVID pandemic in 2020 .... while he was out of work with his restaurant closed - he would regularly spend time along the river at sunset and (unfortunately) smoking cigarettes!

Sunsets and Cigarettes (Ver 2)

Chardonnay; champagne
Oceanside strolls
Blue skies; we had it all
Paris, Provence, Barcelona
Sun drenched broad boulevards

Each hour brought sunshine
Sweet songs we sang
New love, roses and wine
Hand in hand; we smiled at the world
I was yours; you were mine

The world turned; time slipped
Wind split the sky
High tides - returned to the sea
Words not spoken, now so clear
I never heard your goodbye

Sunsets and cigarettes
Memories of you
Sunsets and cigarettes
Now I watch the sunsets
I smoke my cigarettes
But, “remember” is all I can do
Sunsets and cigarettes: memories of you

Sunsets we watched 'em
Cigarettes we smoked ‘em
The best times; sweethearts and friends
You've got a new flame
Long gone forever
Lost that bet - never thought we would end

Sunsets and cigarettes
Memories of you
Sunsets and cigarettes
Now I watch the sunsets
I smoke my cigarettes
But, “remember” is all I can do
Sunsets and cigarettes: memories of you

Sunsets we watched 'em
Cigarettes we smoked ‘em
“Remember” is all I can do
Sunsets and cigarettes: memories of you
